President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, appears to be gearing up for a crackdown against tech giant platforms with a proposed "social media delay" for minors and legislation that could come into effect as early as July. Joining the likes of Australia and the UK, other European nations such as France, Spain, and Germany appear to have started down the road to social media bans or rigorous age verification against those below the age of 16 for fighting off addictions and harmful content. Although von der Leyen states that the move has nothing to do with targeting tech giants and is only about giving childhood to children through the Digital Services Act, this policy move has caused a diplomatic rift with the United States due to the perception of the move as an attack against its tech firms.
